What we do

ABOUT US

WHO ARE WE?

Abacus North West Maths Hub was set up in 2019 as part a national collaborative network of 40 Maths Hubs funded by the Department of Education and coordinated by the National Centre of Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Abacus NW Maths Hub is led by Cardinal Newman College and Our Lady’s Catholic High School, two Outstanding institutions based in Preston, and we work with schools and colleges across Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool and parts of Lancashire (other than Lancaster, Ribble Valley and Wyre, see North North West Maths Hub).

WHAT DO WE DO?

Our lead institutions identify strategic partners and work together to offer a wide range of high quality, funded professional development programmes for maths teachers to work on an area of practice in a sustained manner. Our aim is to develop and spread excellent practice for the benefit of all pupils and students in the broad geographical area that we cover.

The benefits for schools and colleges engaging with a Maths Hub include:

  • Access to free professional development programmes

  • Up-to-date information about all local maths education activities

  • Participation in a network of local leaders of maths education (LLMEs).

Schools and teachers can choose from several types of programme, each with a focus on collaborative, evidence-based professional development. The programmes offer schools and teachers in all phases the chance to engage in CPD with colleagues from other schools over an extended period, and are led by a locally based expert.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

If you are seeking support from a Maths Hub, please get in touch to see what work we are doing and how we might be able to support you. We would also love to hear from you if you have ideas for work or expertise that you would like to share with the Maths Hub.

Whatever your school’s need, phase or position, and whatever your interest, there will be a programme for you. Check out the free maths CPD we have on offer.
